To continue our discussion of The West Wing from here, I'm cutting and please, no spoilers past 2:10.

Since the last time we talked, I've watched:

2-5 And It's Surely to Their Credit

Josh's insurance company is balking at paying his medical bills after he's shot; Ainsley Hayes is nervous about meeting her boss (well-played by John Laroquette, which I raved about here); The President tries to get through the Weekly Radio Address.

Favorite Quotes:

Ainsley: [disbelieving] "Lionel Tribbey thinks hiring me was a great idea."
Leo: "Why are you surprised?"
Ainsley: "Well, because I am a Republican, and Lionel Tribbey is... incredibly not."

Leo: "Ainsley, don't worry about Sam or Josh and Toby or C.J. or the Democrats on the hill or Republicans on television. You're here to serve the President. Anyway... welcome to the White House."

Sam: "You know what, guys? When I write something, I sign my name. Here, I'll show you."
[grabs Joyce's desk blotter, dashing everything on it to the floor
Asshole #1: "SAM!"
Sam: "Do you have any idea how big a harassment suit you just exposed us to? She just... She works here. Which is more than I can say for either one of you."
[grabbing a pen, he quickly scrawls a message on the blotter as they watch. He holds it up for them to see
Sam: "You're fired. S. Seaborn."
[throws blotter down
Asshole #2: "Sam, I don't know who you think you are around here, but you can't fire us."
Lionel Tribby: "Ohhh... YES. He CAN. Leave here, and don't ever come back. It's time for both of you to write your book now."

I thought this was a nice character-building episode and I do enjoy Ainsley.

2-6 The Lame Duck Congress

Nuclear test ban treaties, Ukranian reformists, and Danny and CJ.

Favorite Quotes:

Ainsley: "I'm not gonna say anything. I'm not gonna spill anything. I'm not gonna get Republican juice on you. I'm just gonna sit there and learn from the master Sam. I wanna learn from the master."

Bartlet: "Can I have a couple of asprin, or a weapon of some kind to kill people with?"

Danny: "Hey, CJ."
CJ: "Hey, nimrod."

Another moving the story along episode.

2-7 The Portland Trip

The overnight trip to Portland.  Sam wants to rewrite a speech, CJ is ridiculed.

Favorite Quotes:

Bartlet: "The day-to-day experience of my life has changed in many ways since taking this job."

CJ: "I made fun of Notre Dame."

Sam: "You think a Communist never wrote an elegant phrase? How do you think they got everybody to be Communists?"

Leo: "My divorce papers came today. She thinks I'm going to drink."
Josh: "Sounds like a good reason to."
Leo: "I'm an alcoholic. I don't need a good reason to."

Another good character-building episode.  That's what this show is so good about, you care about the characters so much and it's just the very littlest of things that make you do so.

2-8 Shibboleth

A containter ship is caught smuggling Chinese people into California.  CJ deals with turkeys while Charlie looks for the ultimate carving knife.  Toby wants to open the debate on school prayer.

Favorite Quotes:

CJ: "That's 'cause every time we come up on holiday you guys check out like seniors who are done with finals."
Toby: "We are writing a very important Thanksgiving proclamation."
Sam: "And possibly a new action-adventure series."
Toby: "Nobody here has checked out."
Josh: "Hey, I was just flipping a nickel in my office. Sixteen times in a row it came up tails."

Some reverend: "Good morning, Toby."
Toby: "Good morning, Reverend."
Reverend: "You look determined."
Toby: "I am, sir."
Reverend: "Good boy."

CJ: "In the following days we'll be meeting with the Reverend Al Caldwell, members of the Beijing Embassy and INS agents. The President has asked Josh Lyman and Sam Seaborn to run these meetings so it's entirely possible that by week's end we will have alienated Christians, China and our own government."

Charlie: "OK, sir, I say this with all possible respect, but each of these knives cuts, you know, meat. Why is it important..."
Bartlet: "Because it is something we pass on. Something with history. So we can say, "My father gave this to me and his father gave it to him, and now I'm giving it to you."
Charlie: "Well, OK, sir. But if that's true then why don't you already have one?"
Bartlet: "I do have one."
Charlie: "Why do you need a new one?"
Bartlet: "I'm giving mine away."
Charlie: "To who?"
Bartlet: "Whom."
Charlie:  "To whom?"
Bartlet: "Funny you should ask."
[Reaches into his desk and takes out a package
Bartlet: "Charlie, my father gave this to me and his father gave it to him - and now I am giving it to you."
[Hands Charlie the box
Bartlet: "Take a look."
Charlie: [Opens the box
Bartlet: "The fully tapered bolster allows for sharpening the entire blade."
Charlie:  "It says "P.R." I thought I knew them all but I don't recognize the manufacturer."
Bartlet: "This was made for my family by a Boston silversmith named Paul Revere. I'm proud of you, Charlie."
Charlie: "Thank you, sir."

AW, CHARLIE!  PAUL REVERE.  I don't quite understand why Bartlet gave his family's carving knife made by Paul Revere to Charlie, he has daughters and he looks upon Charlie as a son, but I'm still not sure about the why of it.  It was a beautiful scene and a nice gesture.

This episode had a whole lot going on and I love those episodes.  Toby is my favorite.

2-9 Galileo

The Galileo probe lands on Mars, satellites show a fire in Russia, The President doesn't like green beans.

Favorite Quotes:

Some writerly writer person: "Look, I don’t wanna step on your toes, you dont wanna step on my toes, we're both writers."
Sam: "Yes. I suppose, if we broaden the definition to those who can spell."

CJ: "The stamp and depending on who those people were that were standing near me, the possibility of a story about my being good in bed."
Toby: "Good in bed?"
CJ: "Yes."
Toby: "Why?"
CJ: "Because I am."

Josh: "That's not a theory of physics pretty much disproved by Wile E. Coyote?"

Sam: "Because it's next. Because we came out of the cave, and we looked over the hill and we saw fire; and we crossed the ocean and we pioneered the west, and we took to the sky. The history of man is on a timeline of explorations and this is What's next."

I watch this show and I sigh happily a lot.

2-10 Noel

Josh and PTSD.  A very special holiday episode.  My squishy heart loves those.

Favorite Quotes:

Leo : "Yeah, but I've been down here before, and I know the way out."

Leo: "Long as I got a job, you got a job, you understand?"

Oh, Josh Lyman, you know you are my favorite!

I loved the pacing and the storytelling here.  It doesn't drag you around telling you what to feel, what to think.  It carries you along and you experience it all, you may as well be walking around in Josh Lyman's shoes.  This is one of my very favorite eps.

I've actually watched two more episodes after these, but I'm going to stop here since I've already taken more than an hour to do this.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments.
