"I've been down here before, and I know the way out."

The reason I'm going so very slowly with this show is because it speaks to me so deeply.  I cry with nearly every episode, even at the most mundane things.  The guy that turns off the lamps in the Oval Office at the end of the day?  Tears.  Charlie in his white tie and tails finery?  Tears.  Sam pontificating about exploration?  Tears.  This show speaks to my idealism about my country, the fact that we can always be better than what we are.  The fact that we should have standards and do our best to live up to them.  Have terrible things been done in my name?  Yes.  Should we lie down and hide and give up because of it?  No.  Intelligence and compassion should be virtues that we all should be proud to live by.  This show speaks to my deep sense of friendship and family of choice, of loyalty and mutual respect and an awe and admiration of humanity.

I've gotten a bit jaded and cynical but this show refocuses my world view.  Yes, it is "just a tv show", but it is so much more.  I don't think my mind would have been ready for it six months ago, but with the possibilities at hand, I can watch and I can savor.  It's just taking me a while to chew.

And oh, Josh Lyman, am I so very glad that you have your very own Donna.
